My horse, Basso, and I have come a long way in the year we have been training with Clare. Clare encourages us to reach higher standards without the usual “high pressure” atmosphere you see in so many dressage barns. Our lessons are relaxed and always enjoyable and yet we are advancing faster than I have with any other trainer. She has a unique way of explaining things that makes learning so much easier. I have been riding with Clare Long for about ten years. Never, in my fourteen years around horses, have I met a horse trainer who cares more deeply for the well being of both horse and rider. I came to Clare with a deep love for horses and a dream of becoming a horse trainer that seemed impossible due to my family’s financial limitations. Clare quickly took me under her wing; she made me her working student, allowing me to work in exchange for lessons, show coaching, and experience around horses. Clare has gone above and beyond what is expected of any horse trainer. She has become my mentor, role model and close friend, and she has touched my heart in a way that I will never forget.

I was lucky enough to connect with Clare Long in the fall of 2008 when she moved her business to Primo Cavallo, where I board my two horses. The year before, I had purchased a two-year old filly. who had gotten injured through no fault of her own. Over the months, since she was so green, and since she was not allowed turnout, she had become a bit of a handful. I appealed to Clare for help with the rehab and, as much as possible, to implement basic groundwork training and schooling for the filly at the same time. Needless to say, rehabing a rambunctious three year old thoroughbred has its challenges.

Clare has been a fantastic influence on this young horse over the past year. She helped out faithfully with the rehab, following the veterinarian's instructions to the letter, and always kept me informed of her work on a daily basis. As time progressed, we put the horse back in training under saddle. Clare has done a perfect job teaching this horse basic flatwork under saddle and I have alot of hopes that she will progress thru Second or Third level dressage over the next few years.

Clare also trains my older Hannoverian once a week. She is a former elite hunter who is now sixteen and no longer jumps. I took the plunge and started First and Second level dressage with her, and it's been a delight to get a lesson from Clare each week. The mare is fit and happy and we are enjoying a mini-second career. I recommend Clare Long highly to anyone who is 'hands-on' with their own horse, who likes having a say in their horse's training, and who appreciates a trainer who is open to discussing things in a positive, knowledgeable manner. Clare Long was the trainer of my Hannoverian gelding for three years as he transitioned from the hunter show world to dressage. As my horse was eighteen years old at the time he began dressage work, it was of the utmost importance to me that his physical wellbeing was the primary consideration as he inbarked on a new career. Clare was the perfect choice as a trainer because she handled his workload with care and consideration of his age and soundness. With her expertise he made the transition seamlessly; competing at Training and First level with outstanding scores and qualifying for the championships in his first season of dressage. I found Clare's lessons to be highly informative yet easy to comprehend. While my horse is now semi-retired, both he and I still profit from her work during those three years.
